Damaging gas price hike

Author: Daily Times

Sir: Senator Sherry Rehman has rightly called out the incumbent government via Twitter for raising the gas price, before the minibudget, even though it had opposed similar actions by the previous government.

Not only are the incumbent government’s actions hypocritical, they are also highly reckless. A 143 percent gas hike will be disastrous for our already damaged economy. Though the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government claims this hike will only effect the upper class, this is not true. A rise in gas prices for the upper class and industrial sector will impact prices of various products that the lower classes are also dependent on. It will also significantly raise prices of electricity, which will have repercussions of its own.

I am not a supporter of the PTI, but I am no fan of older, well established parties like the Pakistan Muslim League or the Pakistan People’s Party either. I simply use the rights afforded to me by the Constitution to use my voice and my vote to commend good actions, and condemn actions that weaken our country. One hopes that all Pakistani citizens, but PTI supporters most of all, will rise above political tribalism to hold this government accountable for actions such as these which will hurt the country.
