Sir: Dr Syed Kaleem Imam has assumed the charge of the office of Inspector General of Police, Sindh, on September 12, 2018. I have gone through his profile (available in pieces on the internet) from which it seems as though he is a thorough professional police officer, and is quite capable at his job. His profile further sheds light on the fact that he has served at various important positions both within the country, and abroad. Let’s see how this thorough professional officer performs in the Sindh province, where the police force has become highly politicized, as compared to other provinces of the country. It is to be seen whether he sustains that political pressure or not. It is also to be seen how the new IGP brings reforms in the rotten police system of the province where there are hundreds of black sheep within the police department. These people do nothing to help the citizens of the province and only work to make their lives hell. By and large, our police force is notorious for taking bribes, killing innocent people in fake police encounters, illegally confining poor but innocent citizens in police lockups, resorting to extortion, aiding robberies, protecting thieves and kidnappers, harassing innocent citizens, and even getting involved in heinous crimes like that of rape, murder, etc. Let’s see, how the new IGP Sindh turns around the “goon image” of the police, in to one that is positive. However, I wish him all the best, especially in controlling the rising street crime in Karachi. ABDUL SAMAD Via Email Published in Daily Times, September 14th 2018.
