A resolution was submitted in the Punjab Assembly to express deep sorrow over the demise of former first lady Kulsoom Nawaz while also paying tribute to her struggle for democracy. The resolution submitted by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) legislator Hina Pervaiz Butt reads that Kulsoom Nawaz was under house arrest during the regime of military dictator Pervaiz Musharraf but she continued her struggle for the sake of democracy. “Kulsoom is the only female politician who couldn’t visit her constituency but still the voters showed their respect and love for her through the ballot and got her elected,” the resolution said. This house condoles the sad demise of Kulsoom and also sympathises with the Sharif family, she said in the resolution. According to the resolution, Pakistan has been deprived of a great pro-democratic woman who led PML-N during her husband’s exile. Hina Pervaiz Butt also reflected on the Sharif family’s decision to leave Kulsoom in London during her cancer treatment and travel to Pakistan. Published in Daily Times, September 13th 2018.
