Change emerges through collective effort and by following a viable plan backed with pure intentions, change also surfaces when citizens present their problems and possible solutions to their leaders. Ideas relating to Pakistan’s development are mentioned in this article for the concerned authorities who have promised to serve Pakistan. Education, as highlighted by Prime Minister Imran Khan, must be the government’s first objective to take Pakistan into the future. It is imperative to make education at the primary, secondary and higher levels affordable for all. Private schools should keep their fees within a certain limit and should open their doors for the less-privileged. Moreover, the performance of government-owned educational institutions must be continuously checked. Ghost schools and ghost teachers must be eliminated, provisions should be allocated to remove the stigma attached to government schools and colleges. Furthermore, updating the syllabus of government-owned educational institutions should be given precedence along with upgrading the framework of vocational training institutes. Special programs to train private and public sector teachers should be initiated and monitored in all provinces. Health is another sector which needs immediate attention. Quality of government hospitals must be improved. The government should ensure that medical facilities including an OPD clinic, a maternity ward, an emergency response unit, a burns ward and a child healthcare facility are properly functioning with trained doctors, proper equipment, facilities, paramedic staff and ambulances in all urban and rural areas of Pakistan. Moreover, hospitals and clinics across Pakistan should offer subsidised healthcare facilities and medicines to senior citizens, children, widows and those from the less-privileged strata. Providing justice to the people should also be a priority. All courts of Pakistan must provide speedy justice and close pending cases. While the affluent can manage to have a verdict announced in their favour, it is the poor and the deprived who have to wait for eons before hearing anything from the court. Steps must be taken to treat the affluent and the poor equally and provide justice to all. It is a fact that educated societies which adhere to laws and principles, do not face social crime. Law and security must be upheld in Pakistan and street crime should be curbed. Law enforcing agencies must check and capture those involved in organised crime and must strictly punish such criminal activities. Accidents and unforeseen incidents can occur at any time, therefore, the government should initiate and monitor a nationwide emergency response unit comprising of paramedic staff, critical care paramedics, firefighters, emergency medical technicians, search and rescue teams, disaster response teams, and combat medics. These people should be given proper training and should be stationed across the city. Heavy machinery capable of moving overturned vehicles, removing debris, towing away broken down or damaged vehicles, and evacuating trapped people from the wreckage must also be kept at standby. Moreover, all personnel in the response units must be given refresher courses and training, and the machinery and the equipment must be periodically checked. Moreover, a nationwide emergency response unit should be located in all urban and rural areas as well as on highways. The government should also put emphasis on revamping the infrastructure. All roads, lanes, sewerage lines, water lines, electricity poles, pavements, sidewalks, parks, underpasses and overhead bridges, buildings and other structures that need repair and maintenance must be given due attention. An unknown lane in the suburbs of Rahim Yar Khan to the most used road in the heart of Lahore should get the same attention. Highway infrastructure, however, must be upgraded at the earliest. All highways must be properly carpeted and fitted with street lights while sharp turns and steep roads must be installed with guard rails, cat’s eyes and street lights to prevent accidents. More often than naught, it is the driver’s negligence that causes road accidents. A governing body must be established with which all drivers of heavy vehicles especially those transporting goods and/or passengers on intercity routes are registered. Expert drivers working for this governing body should train bus and truck drivers to make them aware of the risks they face while driving and how to avoid them. Human resource is a vital component of nation building, thus the government should ensure that all clerical and office staff are at least matric pass. Moreover, the managerial staff in these offices, whether private or public, must be graduates and should know their job. The government should make sure that hiring for the public and private sector is done on the basis of merit and education alone. The writer is a columnist and author of You Rise Today!
