The Dairy Safety Teams of Punjab Food Authority (PFA) disposed off as many as 53,616 litres of adulterated milk throughout the province over proved contamination of polluted water and harmful chemicals in it. Thousands of kilogrammes of adulterated milk were being carried on hundreds of vehicles in various cities of Punjab on Wednesday. The authority inspected a total of 2,041 vehicles carrying milk by placing screening checks on the entry and exit points in each district of Punjab to control the wicked practice of milk adulteration. Screening pickets were held while carrying out an operation for checking of milk quality on the directions of PFA Director General Captain (r) Muhammad Usman. Out of 53,616, the teams caught 27,239 litres adulterated milk only in Lahore being carried on 182 vehicles to supplying to local shops in different cities from dairy farms. In Lahore, dairy teams disposed off 6,654 litres of tainted milk that was loaded on 60 vehicles. The adulterated milk was caught in the area of Gajjumata, Saggiyan, Ravi Toll Plaza, Thokar Niaz Baig and Raiwind. Moreover, dairy teams discovered 16,500 litres of contaminated milk from 94 vehicles in Kasur. DG Muhammad Usman said that the purpose behind this drive was to examine the quality of milk for which their teams have conducted screening tests of milk samples on the spot and take immediate action as per the test’s report. He said that Pakistan was included in those few countries where milk pasteurising policy was lacking but now PFA is doing work on it with the collaboration of concerned departments to control adulterated milk and it will be implemented throughout Punjab soon. PFA is conducting tests on packed milk regularly besides loose milk and “we will make Punjab adulteration free”, he said, adding that PFA will increase the number of surprise visits to frequently check milk quality.
