GUJRANWALA: Life in Gujranwala and its adjoining region has come to a standstill due to unannounced and prolonged power outages of up to 10 to 12 hours a day. “We are suffering sleepless nights due to electricity load-shedding after every two hours,” residents of Gujranwala told Daily Times. Meanwhile, power outages in Rahwali and Cantt areas have been increasing day by day. The residents further alleged that they had been receiving inflated bills with incorrect meter readings. Several businessmen also complained of reduced production rate in their industries as many feeders supplying power to the industries tripped. What further irked them was spending more money on alternative sources of power supply, besides a significant rise in production costs of valuables in the industries. They appealed to the government for devising an effective policy for the distribution of power to save industries as trade deficit has been increasing. Woman beats hospital guard for asking bribe A hospital security guard was beaten up by a woman on Wednesday for allegedly demanding bribe for the issuance of death certificate of her son. Reportedly, Raheela Bibi accused a security guard of asking Rs200 for the death certificate of her one-year-old son, who died in the hospital during treatment. Doctor ‘tortures’ police constable for demanding medical certificate A doctor on Wednesday allegedly tortured a police constable in DHQ Hospital for demanding a medical certificate. Reportedly, police constable Afnan said that he asked Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr Salman to issue a medical certificate, but he refused by saying that he was not in police uniform. He alleged that when he requested him again, he got angry and beat him by locking him inside a room in hospital. Meanwhile, the hospital administration started investigation into the matter. ACE arrests WMC official in bribery case The Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) on Wednesday arrested a supervisor of the Waste Management Company (WMC) in a bribery case. Reportedly, two citizens including Bilal Ilyas and Muhammad Bilal accused a supervisor Sheikh Tariq of taking bribe from them for recruiting them in WMC, but issued them bogus appointment letter. The initial investigation suggested enough evidence against the accused, who was arrested by ACE officers. Police investigate unidentified body found in canal A body of an unidentified person was recovered from a canal near a private housing society in Gujranwala. Reportedly, passersby spotted a body floating in a canal, and subsequently informed the Sadar police station. Meanwhile, police shifted the deceased’s body to DHQ Hospital for autopsy while further investigation was underway. Published in Daily Times, August 30th 2018.
