The speakers of the conference demanded that rules be formulated for SIRA2013 to ensure its swift implementation. They demanded that the Haris all their rights incuding social security, pension, right to making trade unions and CBAs. They further demanded that the safety and health of agricultural workers be ensured and the haris be brought in the orbit of Occupational Health and Safety law, passed by the Sindh Assembly in 2017. The speakers demanded to give the Haris all their rights incuding social security, pension, right to making trade unions and CBAs, besides making rules for the Sindh Industrial Relations Action 2013 (SIRA 2013) to ensure its immediate implementation. They demanded that a mechanism be formed to set the rates of paddy, sugarcane and other crops in consultation with the representatives of the haris and all basic facilities of life including water, electric and gas utilities be provided to the villages of hari. They further demanded paved roads and drainage schemes for these impoverished villages. The speakers demanded that schools, dispensaries and hospitals be set up in villages. They also demanded an end to discriminatory attitude to the haris, especially those belonging to minority communities. They also demanded that steps be taken to stop the forced kidnappings, harassment, conversions and marriages of Hari women. They said that measures should be taken to ensure that female haris get equal wages as they were being paid less than their male counterparts. The speakers demanded that haris be given representation in assemblies as per their proportion in population. They demanded an end to the feudal system and distribution of land amongst landless peasants through land reforms. They further asked the government to take urgent steps to overcome the artificial shortage of water in Sindh and ensure just distribution of water. They also demanded that Thar be declared a ‘calamity-hit’ region and jobs be provided to locals. Published in Daily Times, August 19th 2018.
