Sir: At the age of 94, I thank God for His blessing to enable me to enjoy all the 71 Independence Day celebrations of my beloved country. However, this year, the Independence Day brought with it something new. The newly elected members of the 15th NA took oath on August 13 in a most cordial and civilized manner. The members elect, who might not have even talked in the past, were seen shaking hands and greeting each other. The glimpses of the unity and maturity of newly elected members with different ideologies elates one to the height of happiness and pleasure. It was most pleasurable and memorable moment to see the third consecutive transition of out very fragile democracy. Not only we did not ever have three consecutive elected governments changing hands democratically, but also such display of civil and mature behavior was unseen. It would be unfair not to mention the senior politicians who could not make it to the house this time. However, this is the beauty of democracy, and seems we are now on the right path in this regard. I pray to the Almighty to grant forbearance and wisdom to new members to maintain this atmosphere of even opposing others in a civil and dignified manner. They need to work for building a stronger and prosperous Pakistan. The members of the NA must set an example of unity and hard working for generations to follow. They should not dig past in their speeches just for point scoring but participate in the proceedings of the NA and submit their proposals for the betterment of the country. By adopting these measures both lawmakers and people who mandate them to power will absolve themselves of their duties and be remembered by their progenies in a positive manner.
