Sir: According to a recent report, a suicide bomber struck a private education center in Shia Kabul, where high school graduates were preparing for university entrance exams, killing 48 young men and women, to boot, 67 people were also wounded in the bombing. The death toll rose steadily after the immediate casualties of the attack; all the victims were students. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack as of yet. A member of the city’s Shia clerical council Jawad Ghawari blamed the Islamic State (IS). IS has carried similar hate crimes against the Shiite community in the past, hitting mosques, schools and cultural centers. There were atleast thirteen attacks on the Shiites in the past year, in Kabul alone. Moreover by targeting educational and cultural institutes, terrorists have clearly shown that they are against the Islamic principle of learning for both men and women. Thus the Afghani government should provide strong security to the educational centres which are threatened by terrorism. JEEHIND PIR BUX Kech Published in Daily Times, August 17th 2018.
