Water supply to different parts of the city was disrupted on Friday after a pipeline at the Dhabeji and Gharo pumping station burst, depriving residents of roughly 80-100 million (mn) gallons of water. According to a Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) spokesperson, a 72-inch diameter pipeline burst due to a power breakdown at the pumping station, which led to a back pressure that the pipeline could not withstand. “The voltage supply to the pumping station fluctuated to dangerous levels at least five times between Thursday night and Friday morning,” shared the KWSB spokesperson. Reportedly, the pipeline got ruptured at three different points, inundating the surrounding areas. According to KWSB, efforts to repair the pipeline began right after the incident and the affected areas of the metropolis were supplied water from alternative sources. The main sources of water for Karachi are Keenjhar lake (Indus River) and Hub dam, from where water is pumped through three main bulk pumping stations located at Dhabeji, Gharo, and Hub. In a similar incident earlier in June, a rupture in 72-inch diameter pipeline at Dhabeji and Gharo pumping station had resulted in suspended water supply to the metropolis. The pipeline had burst due to back pressure caused by a power breakdown. Published in Daily Times, August 11th 2018.
