Raoof Hasan

Pakistan shall never be the same again

Let’s raise our hands in prayer

For we have forgotten the norm of praying

We suffer nothing but the pangs of love

For we remember neither idols nor gods.

Let’s raise our hands that the resplendence of eternity

May replace the poison of today with sweetness of tomorrow

And those who can no longer bear the burden of torment

Be blessed with easier times.

Those who have been robbed of the sight of the dawn

Their nights be lit with the glow of a candle

And whose feet tread a path leading nowhere

May see their destination beckoning them.

And those pursuing the tenets of falsehood and hypocrisy

Find the courage to defy and the confidence to question

And those whose heads are bowed under the gauntlet of the sword

May have the strength to block the executioner’s hand.

Let’s raise our hands that we have the power to declare our love

And put our being to rest

And the word of truth, the thorn in our heart,

May find expression that it rankles no more. - Faiz Ahmad Faiz: ‘Dua’
