HYDERABAD: An influential landlord in Sanghar district, which is notorious for bonded labour, tortured a mother for breastfeeding her child and – during her torture – killed the infant, stated police on Wednesday. An infant, Altaf, died from torture by the landlord against his peasant mother in the village of Anwar Rasti near Sinjhoro district Sanghar. The district and sessions judge in Sanghar has taken notice of the incident and asked the SSP for report after inquiry. According to police, a landless farmer, Jamila Solangi, was working on an agriculture farm of the landlord Ashraf Mari in the Sinjhoro town of Sanghar districts. Upon hearing her child cry out to be fed, she rushed to take him in her lap and started to breastfeed him. “Suddenly, the landlord arrived and asked her why she was not working in the field and when she told him that she would continue work after breastfeeding her child who was crying of hunger, the infuriated landlord went out of his sense and began to kick her and beat her with his fists. The child in her lap, being subject to this onslaught as well died instantly,” police said. Taking the dead body of their child, the family approached district and sessions judge, Sanghar Mir Safdar Hussain Talpur, who took notice of the incident on the application of Umed Ali Solangi, (father of the child) and ordered SSP Sanghar to make an inquiry and take legal action in the case. SSP Farakh Lanjar shared that a post mortem of the child has been carried out from the civil hospital and the body has been handed to the family. He assured all that the police was probing the matter from all sides.
