Sir: July is well known in Pakistan as a month of extreme heat, uncomfortable humidity, rains and floods. Certain members of the electorate; including senior citizens, voters in poor health, voters on Hajj and flood affectees will not be able to exercise their right to vote because of this. The high tempers associated with the hot weather are also likely to make the elections more violent than usual. In this country, elections have always proven to be nothing more than a contest for the rich and powerful. Nothing has changed for the Pakistani commoners after any of this country’s elections. Certain politicians will get richer, while the poor will remain as poor as ever, unless that is they get poorer. The last ten years of our feudal democracy have shown how rich lawmakers enjoy luxurious lives at public expense. If anything, the common people will welcome the postponement of elections so that there will be time to hold corrupt politicians accountable, lest they are elected again. I wish there was some system to ascertain the opinion of common Pakistanis on matters impacting their lives, but they have no voice in our feudal democracy. I hope the honourable Chief Justice of Pakistan will kindly reconsider his decision to hold elections on July 25, and permit flexibility.
