Sir: Any primary school student today will know about global warming and its causes. When human beings burn fossil fuels like petrol, diesel or furnace oil it creates emissions such like carbon dioxide, which go into the atmosphere and trap the suns heat around the planet, causing a rise in temperature. Should global warming continue at its current pace, numerous plant and animal species will go extinct forever. Entire regions will become uninhabitable for the human race and global agriculture will be devastated. This is a process which has already started. As such, governments around the world need to take action against all possible sources of emissions which cause global warming. Here in Pakistan, there are numerous sources of these greenhouse gases. One which needs to be noted is electricity generators. Because Pakistan suffers from an electricity shortage and load shedding, countless people and businesses use generators for their power generation needs. They all run on fossil fuels. Despite the load shedding issue, the use of these generators needs to be discouraged because of the danger they pose to the environment. At the same time, solar powered batteries should be subsidized to encourage their use as an alternative. The government should also look into the huge number of cars on Pakistani roads, and prohibit banks from giving car loans or leases. At the same time, the production and purchase of hybrid cars should be encouraged through subsidies. MURTAZA HASSAN Lahore Published in Daily Times, May 22nd2018.
