Sir: The National Institute of Cardio Vascular Disease (NICVD) has been established by the government of Sindh at Karachi, Hyderabad, Sehwan, Larkana, Mithi, Khairpur and Sukkur. These health facilities were inaugurated by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari along with his team. The facilities at Karachi and Sukkur are particularly impressive. They have 300 beds each for in-patients along with 24/7 emergency and intensive care facilities — including for heart bypass surgery. The NICVDs are a milestone for healthcare in Sindh, and will provide the citizenry of the province with hitherto unavailable access to quality heart-related healthcare facilities — and that too, free of cost. This is not all. The Sindh government also established a kidney transplant centre in Karachi and a centre for liver transplantation in Gambat Khairpur, which will also provide free service. Sindh government also launched a free Ambulance Service in the Thatta and Sijawal districts. Now people have to decide whether they need the Metro Bus Services the Punjab government offers, or free treatment in hospitals like Sindh. After the 18th amendment, the NICVD is an autonomous institute; the Sindh Chief Minister has increased its annual budget to Rs 8 billion. This money will eventually be utilized for the benefit of the people of Sindh. HUMAIRA ALWANI Via E-mail Published in Daily Times, May 22nd2018.
