Sir: Recent approval of a bill for the Protection of Transgender Persons’ Rights by the National Assembly of Pakistan is a landmark achievement for the most mocked and humiliated community living in Pakistan. Since the founding of this country, and even before that, the Trans community has not been accepted by our society. Now the contents in this bill are encouraging them to live a normal life. The Supreme Court has recognized the ‘third gender’ and entitled the community to all basic rights enjoyed by any other citizens of the country. But a bill is just a bill. It is nothing if it is not implemented on the ground. Consistent efforts will be needed to bring this vulnerable community into mainstream Pakistani society.
