Sir: The Meteorological office confirmed a few days ago that Nawabshah became the hottest place on earth a few days ago as temperatures went as high as 50 degrees Celsius. Nawabshah broke its own record of 49.2 degrees Celsius, which was made in 2017. This is the first time temperatures have been this high since April. In 2017, the temperature rose as high as 54 degrees Celsius in Turbat, but that still wasn’t in April. There is no longer any doubt about whether climate change is affecting the country. Pakistan is one of the most polluted countries on the planet and as its citizens, the onus of responsibility for this lies on us. Recently, I came across a photo of my own city, Karachi. Its skyline was completely covered with smoke. In order to secure the future of our country, we need to tackle pollution, increase the green cover in our cities and take cars which emit excessive carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide off of our roads. We must do this to preserve Pakistan’s environment for future generations. ZN BALOCH Via E-mail Published in Daily Times, May 10th 2018.
