Saba Qamar and Irrfan Khan-starrer ‘Hindi Medium’ has opened to a flying start in China, where Aamir Khan and Salman Khan’s films have done brisk business in recent times. The film was backed by T-Series and Maddock Films. According to Indian publications, the film released in China on April 4th and has collected $3.42 million on its opening day. Hindi Medium, therefore, emerged as the second biggest Bollywood opener in the country after Aamir Khan’s ‘Secret Superstar’ as it earned a total of $9.70 million to date. China has a quota on the number of overseas movies that can be screened in the country each year. However, Indian films are finding increased presence there. Trade analyst, Taran Adrash tweeted,“Slowly and gradually, Indian films are getting a firm foothold in China”. A quirky social comment on the education system, Hindi Medium is directed by Saket Chaudhary. Producer of T-Series, Bhushan Kumar also said in a statement, “Hindi Medium is content-driven. There’s a unique twist in this tale.” Bhushan Kumar also added, “What I’m really happy about is that this success reinforces the T-Series and Maddock Films bond. We are striving to produce varied content and when a film with a big heart like Hindi Medium works across borders, it gives us immense satisfaction.” Produced by Bhushan Kumar and Dinesh Vijan and directed by Saket Chaudhary, Hindi Medium revolved around the hilarious consequences that arise when a Delhi couple decides to get their daughter enrolled in a ‘posh’ school. The movie caters very serious subject of barriers in education and class discrimination but what makes this movie remarkable is the use of humour. Certainly, both the stars from different countries have also done a noteworthy job. Published in Daily Times, April 7th 2018.
