Sir: Saudi Arabia has recently announced its plans to spend billions on building new venues and flying in Western acts, in a total overhaul of its entertainment sector. This was unthinkable not long ago. Saudi Arabia is known for its ultra-conservatism but the kingdom has now embarked on a wide-ranging programme of social and economic reforms driven by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. This indeed is a great change. But I truly hope that this liberalization of domestic politics also casts its impact on the kingdom’s foreign policy. KSA is known for its export of radical Islam and expansionist policy in the Middle East with its ongoing highly suspicious war in Yemen. Without reforms in these policies, KSA’s reforms are meaningless and will remain reliant on the shallow pillars of economics and international trade. Reforms are always manifold; they do not take place in vacuum. I hope Saudis also know about this principle of change. ZAHID BUKHARI Islamabad Published in Daily Times, February 23rd 2018.
