Sir: Senate on has passed a bill seeking treatment of those who attempt suicide and survive rather than punishment under Section 325 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC). The bill urges to decriminalise attempted suicide, and instead offers medical treatment and protection to those people who make an effort to take their own lives. I believe this is a very good move and reflects a progressive approach to the issue. Mental issues and suicide has long been surrounded by stereotypes and taboos. There is a lack of awareness about depression. Person who has attempted suicide is either ostracized or is thought of as someone who is evil or dangerous. A few reports have suggested increase in suicide rate. While it’s also important to discuss and solve other major and visible issues, Pakistani society must also talk about these issues that have long been held as taboos. Societies are made up of individuals and not vice versa. Therefore, it is the duty of the state to take measures for the betterment of their mental health and consider it a basic necessity.
