Islamabad: A contingent of army troops is stationed in Saudi Arabia following the ongoing Pak-KSA bilateral security cooperation, said the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) in a statement issued on Thursday. The statement came after a meeting between the Ambassador of Saudi Arabia and the Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa. “Matters of mutual interest including regional security situation were discussed during the meeting”, ISPR said. ISPR’s statement on troops deployment in KSA stated, “In continuation of ongoing Pak-KSA bilateral security cooperation, Pakistan Army contingent is being sent to KSA on training and advise mission. These or troops already there will not be employed outside KSA. Pak Army maintains bilateral security cooperation with many other Gulf Cooperation Council/regional countries.” In a joint session of the Parliament in 2015, a resolution was passed opposing the deployment of troops in Saudi Arabia unless there is a direct threat to the Saudi territory. “(Parliament) desires that Pakistan should maintain neutrality in the Yemen conflict so as to be able to play a proactive diplomatic role to end the crisis,” it said. The number of troops deployed in Saudi Arabia was not disclosed by the ISPR as yet.
