LARKANA: To evaluate prevalence of leprosy in Larkana region, an analysis of 102 cases from 2001 to 2011 at Leprosy Centre, Larkana, was conducted in which 49 were male and 53 were female. According to the survey, they were born in rural areas of Larkana region with peak age of the disease in their fourth decade. The most common form of the disease was borderline tuberculoid (BT) found especially in female patients. Leprosy is a rare disease but in Larkana region it is still encountered. It is important for practitioners to be aware of its diagnosis when they examine leprosy patients, the analysis added. Dr Farooq Rahman Soomro, in-charge Dr Ruth Pfau Leprosy Centre, conducted the survey. The centre had registered as many as 796 patients out of which 20 were on chemotherapy, 54 were discharged and 15 new cases were registered in 2017. Published in Daily Times, January 22nd 2018.
