Dear Zainab, I write to you with tears in my eyes and a shiver running down my spine. Your eyes tell a thousand fairytales and innocent dreams. Every time I walk past a heap of trash, I find my soul flattened, helpless and numb. We as a society have failed you. The air we breathe whispers your name and reminds us of the helplessness that you once felt. Your murderer’s hands are now choking us as well, but our souls refuse to leave. This everlasting pain and aching thirst that surrounds us today are nothing but our own reflection in the mirror. We are ashamed of becoming the demons that once frightened you. The moment you moved to a better place, angels started taking shelter under the shadow of forbidding darkness that lives within our society. Zainab, the whole country is shouting your name today. Yours sincerely A BROTHER Published in Daily Times, January 17th 2018.
