Hyderabad: Civil society activists demanded in a statement release condemned the recent incident in Kasur and demanded the rapist be held accountable and punish him for the heinous crime. Child rights activists Iqbal Detho, Dr. Ashothama of Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, Javed Hussain of Sindh Community Foundation, Zahid Thebo of Society for the Protection of the Rights of Child said in joint statement that such incidents of child sexual abuse are increasing day-by day but due to poor implementation of the law the culprits are beyond the reach of the law. These incidents are creating insecurity and fear among children as well parents. They emphasized that legislation related to child sexual abuse remains poorly implemented, there is now a need to implement laws to protect children against all forms of violence and child sexual abuse. They said that there is a need to change the behavior of society through child rights education and awareness amongst care givers such as parents, teachers and communities through media and educational tools. They said such cases of child sexual abuse, abduction of children also are frequent in Sindh province but in most of cases parents don’t speak out due to so-called fear of honor so many cases go unreported. They said despite of creating new structures to deal the cases of child sexual abuse there is need to strengthen systems in already formulated laws like Sindh Protection Authority Act 2011 which is not fully active in its true spirit. According to the law Child Protection Unit had to be established but only in few districts it done despite these units need to be functional as per the spirit of law. Besides Child Protection Committee had to be formed to deal issues of child abuse but yet these structure are not fully implemented. They said that seems that child protection is not on the key agenda of government which need to be on priority. They demanded for comprehensive child right protection system at district level need to be established as envisaged in Sindh Child Protection Authority Act-2011 section 16 3. They suggested that mass campaign required for child protection at all levels of society in this regard role of teacher is very essential to teach children about child protection. They also suggested that lesson on child protection need to be part of the curriculum to aware and create confidence among children themselves to prevent from any form of abuse and violence.
