Sir: The entire Pakistani nation feels betrayed over the recent statements from the US. These offensive remarks were made despite decades of cooperation. Pakistan will continue its sincere counter terrorism efforts even without financial support from the US and it will do so in accordance with its national interests and remain committed to bring it to its logical conclusion, working with other stakeholders in the region.According to the reports in the media, this matter of fact, realistic and honest statement has been made by the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa in telephonic conversation with Commander US Central Command (CENTCOM) General Joseph Votel some days back. Besides the CENTCOM commander, the Army Chief was also called by a US Senator to discuss Pak-US security cooperation post President Trump’s Tweet on New Years Day.He has quite rightly told the US General that Pakistan has suffered greatly due to great power contestation in the region. Pakistan will not seek resumption of aid but expects honourable recognition of its contributions, sacrifices and unwavering resolve in the fight against terrorism for peace and stability. Return of Afghan refugees is essential for peace in the region and Pakistan will keep supporting all initiatives for peace in Afghanistan despite its tendency to make a scapegoat out of Pakistan. Peace in Afghanistan is the only way towards ensuring peace and stability in the region. The CENTCOM Commander on his part has assured the COAS that no unilateral action on territory of Pakistan is being planned despite the suspension of military aid and a flurry of hostile statements and US values Pakistan’s role towards war on terror and hopes the ongoing turbulence remains a temporary phase. The conversation between the top army generals of Pakistan and US is quite encouraging and it is sincerely hoped that whatever assurance General Joseph Votel has given to General Bajwa will be duly honoured as it is for Washington and Kabul to do more to eliminate safe havens of terrorists from the Afghan soil for the sake of durable peace in the region.AAMER A NAAMJEELahorePublished in Daily Times, January 14th 2018.
