KHAIRPUR: A molecular genetics laboratory (MCL) was inaugurated at Shah Abdul Latif University (SALU) Khairpur’s Department of Zoology, funded by Higher Education Commission (HEC) Pakistan under its research project National Research Programme for Universities (NRPU). SALU Khairpur University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Parveen Shah said the research facility would provide research opportunities to the community at low cost and the laboratory had been completed at a cost of Rs 3.7 million. She appreciated the efforts of HEC for generous support in establishment of first ever genetics laboratory of department of zoology with latest equipment including PCR thermocycler, gel electrophoresis, pH meter, digital weight balance, water bath, vortex machine, centrifuge machines, gel documentation system and others. The vice chancellor commended endeavours of principal investigator Dr Javed Ahmed Ujjan and Department Of Zoology Chairman Dr Abdul Manan Shaikh for setting up the laboratory. Dr Javed Ahmed Ujjan briefed on the salient features and various applications of the laboratory including selective DNA isolation, PCR amplification & qualification of DNA, medical application, human genome detection, cancer detection and genetic testing, infectious disease applications such as HIV, forensic application-paternity & maternity and DNA finger printing. Dr Javed said the facility would provide a viable platform to MS/MPhil and PhD research scholars. Dr Abdul Manan Shaikh also briefed vice chancellor about the academic and research work of the department. Prof Dr Taj Muhammad Lashari, Prof Dr Maqsood Zia, Syed Mehdi Shah Rashdi, Zaibun Nisa Memon, Dr Hakim Ali Sahito, Dr Khadim Hussain, Memon, Dr Safdar Ujjan, Imtiaz Memon, Imran Ali Soomro Ali Ahmed Kandhar, Zoovia, Moomal, and others were also present on the occasion.
