Sindh announces two-day diwali holidays for hindu community

Published on: October 15, 2025 5:22 PM

The Sindh government has announced a two-day public holiday for the Hindu community on the occasion of Diwali, one of the most significant festivals in their religious calendar. As per the official notification, October 20 and 21 — Monday and Tuesday — will be observed as holidays across the province, allowing Hindu citizens to celebrate the festival with full zeal and enthusiasm.

The notification, issued by the Services, General Administration and Coordination Department (SGA&CD), states that the holidays will be applicable to all government offices, autonomous and semi-autonomous bodies, and local councils under the Sindh government’s administrative control. The directive ensures that Hindu employees across departments can participate in religious rituals and family gatherings without workplace responsibilities during the festive period.

Furthermore, the order applies uniformly to both urban and rural areas, including district councils, municipal offices, and other local authorities. The provincial administration emphasized that the initiative aims to recognize the cultural and religious diversity of Sindh while promoting inclusivity and interfaith harmony. The two consecutive holidays will also enable extended celebrations and travel for those visiting family members across different districts.

Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is celebrated to mark the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. It is observed with prayers, the lighting of lamps, the decoration of homes, the exchange of sweets, and various cultural festivities. For the Hindu community in Sindh — the largest in Pakistan — the festival carries deep spiritual, cultural, and emotional significance.

With this announcement, Sindh continues its tradition of honoring religious festivals of all faiths. The move has been widely appreciated by the Hindu community, as it allows them to celebrate Diwali in peace and unity, reflecting the province’s long-standing commitment to cultural coexistence and respect for all religious traditions.
