Sir: World Diabetes Day is held every year on 14 November. It is a day when millions of people around the world come together to raise awareness about diabetes and the conditions faced by diabetes patients. Diabetes Day was first introduced in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) in response to growing concerns about the escalating threats to health posed by the disease. World Diabetes Day became an official United Nations Day in 2006 with the passage of UN Resolution 61/225. It is estimated that 422 million adults live with diabetes around the world. That is one in every 11 people. Prevalence of the disease has almost doubled since 1980. The disease is known to affect not only the health of an individual but also entire economies because of how debilitating it is. It can cause conditions like blindness, kidney failure, heart attack, stroke and lower limb amputation. I would like to request that World Diabetes Day be promoted in Pakistan, especially Balochistan. Balochistan Health Minister Rahmat Saleh Baloch should promote World Diabetes Day so that people who do not have awareness about the disease can become more educated on the topic. M.
