Mobile phone services have started shutting down in Karachi as authorities implement strict security arrangements for 9th Muharram processions across the country. Similar actions are being taken in other major cities, including Lahore, Islamabad, and Quetta.
In Karachi, signals began fading by mid-morning in areas where central processions are expected. Sensitive locations and procession routes have been sealed off. Police and Rangers have been deployed in large numbers to ensure safety and maintain peace.
Meanwhile, internet services have also started to slow down or cut off in various neighbourhoods, especially Saddar, Nazimabad, and Lyari, causing inconvenience for residents and businesses. Users reported difficulty accessing online services and navigation apps.
The communication blackout has created added difficulties at emergency sites. In Lyari’s Baghdadi area, where a five-storey building collapsed on Friday, rescue teams faced signal issues while coordinating operations. The tragic collapse killed at least 16 people, and efforts are ongoing to search for more survivors under the rubble.
Officials stated that these suspensions are temporary but necessary. Authorities have asked citizens to avoid unnecessary movement, cooperate with security forces, and use landline communication where possible. The Sindh Home Department is monitoring the situation closely and may extend or lift the suspension based on real-time security assessments.
