Jamie Smith’s 184 shatters 28-year England test record

England’s young wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith has etched his name into the history books with a remarkable unbeaten 184-run innings against India during the second Test of the five-match series being played at Edgbaston, Birmingham.

Facing a massive Indian total of 587 runs in the first innings, England were under immense pressure. But on Day 3, 24-year-old Smith rose to the occasion, scoring a fearless and classy hundred off just 80 balls — an exceptional feat in Test cricket, particularly under pressure.

Smith’s performance was not just a personal milestone — it was historic. He became the highest-scoring wicketkeeper-batter for England in Test history, surpassing the long-standing record of 173 runs set by Alec Stewart in 1997 against New Zealand.

Alongside Smith, Harry Brook also contributed significantly with a solid 158-run knock, and together they helped England post a respectable 407 runs before being bowled out.

India, with a strong first-innings lead, ended Day 3 at 64/1 in their second innings, extending their overall lead to 244 runs, putting England back under pressure despite Smith’s heroics.

Notably, England currently lead the series 1-0, but this Test is poised for a competitive finish with India eyeing a comeback and England relying on their bowling strength to stay in the game.

Smith’s innings is being hailed by former players and analysts alike as one of the most promising performances by an England batter in recent years — particularly given the strength of India’s bowling attack and the pressure of playing from behind.
