The Punjab government has launched an ambitious plan to produce 6 million cotton bales this season, aiming to revive the cotton sector and strengthen the textile industry. Secretary Agriculture Iftikhar Ali Sahoo announced the target during a crop progress review meeting in Multan.
He stated that field reports are encouraging, showing cotton plants in healthy condition. Recent monsoon rains have helped the crop grow better, especially in areas of South Punjab where cotton is a major cash crop.
The early harvest is already in progress in parts of the province. Farmers are reporting yields between 7 to 9 maunds per acre during the first picking. If these trends continue, overall production could exceed expectations.
To support farmers, the agriculture department is deploying extension teams to provide technical guidance, pest control advice, and field visits. Farmers are being advised to ensure timely irrigation, weeding, and pest management, especially against whitefly and pink bollworm.
Additionally, the department will distribute awareness material and organize training sessions in cotton-growing areas like Multan, Bahawalpur, Lodhran, and Rahim Yar Khan. Officials believe that with strong farmer engagement and favorable weather, Punjab can meet or even surpass its production target this year.
