South Africa delivered a dominant performance to crush Zimbabwe by 328 runs in the first Test in Bulawayo on Tuesday. The hero of the match was all-rounder Corbin Bosch, who claimed a five-wicket haul to go with his maiden Test century, helping his team take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
Set a daunting 537-run target, Zimbabwe collapsed for just 208 on day four. Bosch starred with the ball, taking 5 for 43, while debutant Codi Yusuf added 3 for 22 to break Zimbabwe’s resistance. Only Wellington Masakadza (57) and captain Craig Ervine (49) showed fight, as the rest of the batting lineup folded quickly.
Bosch had already impressed with the bat, scoring an unbeaten 100 in South Africa’s first innings. His all-round brilliance earned praise from stand-in skipper Keshav Maharaj, who said Bosch had “conquered both facets” of the game. Maharaj also praised the young squad’s execution, as only four players from the World Test Championship final featured in this match.
Zimbabwe’s innings started poorly when Nick Welch was dismissed on the first ball of the day. Bosch then removed star batter Sean Williams for just 26, stalling Zimbabwe’s hopes. Ervine and Masakadza built a brief partnership of 83, but once Bosch dismissed the captain, the tail offered little resistance. The match ended with Dewald Brevis taking his first Test wicket.
Zimbabwe will now regroup ahead of the second and final Test, starting Sunday at the Queens Sports Club. Ervine admitted the team must convert starts into big scores, noting that “30s and 40s won’t cut it at this level.” The team is also monitoring opener Brian Bennett, who suffered a concussion in the first innings.
