TEL AVIV – U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday urged Israel and Hamas to finalize a ceasefire deal in Gaza, calling for the immediate return of hostages and an end to the 20-month conflict. His comments came as behind-the-scenes diplomacy suggested a potential breakthrough.
“MAKE THE DEAL IN GAZA. GET THE HOSTAGES BACK!!!” Trump posted on Truth Social, expressing frustration over the stalled negotiations. He had earlier stated there could be a ceasefire agreement within a week, boosting hopes for progress in the region.
An Israeli official revealed that plans were underway for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to visit Washington soon, suggesting momentum in peace efforts. Meanwhile, Netanyahu’s adviser Ron Dermer is set to hold talks in the U.S. this week to further explore a possible truce agreement.
Trump also weighed in on Netanyahu’s ongoing corruption trial, calling it a distraction from crucial negotiations. He labeled the proceedings a “witch hunt,” comparing them to his own legal troubles and urging Israeli authorities to cancel the trial during this sensitive time.
Despite renewed discussions, a major obstacle remains: Hamas wants a complete Israeli withdrawal and permanent end to the war, while Israel demands Hamas’s surrender and disarmament. Netanyahu’s office blames Hamas for blocking the deal, while Hamas accuses Israel of stalling.
At the same time, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza deepens. The Israeli military has ordered mass evacuations in northern Gaza, citing plans for expanded operations. Rights groups warn this may lead to forcible displacement, as thousands who had returned during a temporary ceasefire are once again forced to flee.
