Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has ordered the urgent rollout of electric buses across South Punjab and underdeveloped districts. The move is part of a province-wide push for equal development, clean air, and modern transportation. She emphasized that remote areas must receive the same facilities as major cities.
Chairing a high-level meeting, the Chief Minister reviewed progress on multiple public transport projects. The Transport Department announced that 1,340 electric buses will be launched by the end of the year. Of these, 240 will go to 24 backward districts in the first phase. From August to October, 500 more buses will be sent to major cities, while 600 additional buses will arrive before December.
To support clean air goals, 400 electric buses will be introduced in Lahore, Sheikhupura, Nankana Sahib, and Kasur. CM Maryam underlined that environmental impact and commuter needs must shape all routes. She stressed that the focus should remain people-centered and inclusive.
Major transport projects were also reviewed, including the Gujranwala BRT. The planned 22-kilometer corridor will have 28 stations and electric buses running every eight minutes. Four depots and a smart traffic system will support the project, along with 80 feeder buses to enhance local access. Expansion of the BRT line is under consideration.
Progress on the Faisalabad Red and Orange Line projects was also discussed. The Red Line will stretch 23.4 km and serve over 185,000 passengers daily, while the Orange Line will span 29 km with 21 stations. A new route connecting FIEDMC to Salami Chowk has been added, further aligning with the CM’s vision of equal and sustainable development across Punjab.
