Gaza on the brink: Trump sees hope for ceasefire as violence rages

US President Donald Trump expressed hope Friday for a new ceasefire in Gaza. He believes it could happen “within the next week.” This comes as the conflict worsens, with many civilians dying near aid centers. Trump’s comments show optimism as the US tries to broker peace. Meanwhile, criticism grows over Israel’s actions in Gaza, especially regarding civilian deaths.

Recently, Israel broke a ceasefire in March and launched new attacks on Hamas. Hamas responded with rocket fire into Israel on October 7, 2023. Since then, Israel has stopped food and supplies from entering Gaza. This has caused fears of famine, as aid efforts face deadly challenges. The US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation is now helping deliver food, but reports of killings at aid sites increase. The UN calls the aid system a “killing field,” with many seeking help being shot or killed.

Palestinians trying to access food have been targeted at distribution centers. According to Gaza’s health ministry, over 500 people have been killed near aid sites since late May. The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, condemned the violence. He said, “People are being killed just for trying to feed themselves.” Doctors Without Borders also called the aid effort “slaughter masquerading as humanitarian aid.” Israel denies targeting civilians and says it provides millions of meals to Gaza.

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected reports that soldiers shot at crowds near aid sites. Israel claims the UN opposes its efforts and sides with Hamas. The military is investigating alleged war crimes at aid locations, but no official findings are out yet. Meanwhile, Gaza’s civil defense reports 80 Palestinians killed on Friday by Israeli strikes or fire, including people waiting for aid. The Israeli military says it is looking into these incidents and denies shooting at civilians.

Hamas and its allies continue attacking Israeli forces. Hamas shelled an Israeli vehicle in southern Gaza, while other groups attacked soldiers near Khan Yunis. Since October 7, 2023, Hamas’s attack on Israel has killed over 1,200 people, mostly civilians, according to official figures. The violence persists as both sides remain locked in a deadly cycle, with hopes for peace hanging in the balance.
