Punjab tightens vehicle rules: Fitness certificates required for bikes too

Lahore: The Punjab government has taken a big step to reduce air pollution. After private cars, motorcycles will also need fitness certificates. This new rule will help identify vehicles that pollute excessively. Motorcycles causing pollution will be checked and fined if they fail the test.

Muhammad Hassan Ahsan, Secretary of Punjab Provincial Transport Authority, said the Motor Vehicle Ordinance 1965 has been updated. Now, all motorcycles must get fitness certificates to operate legally. This change comes as pollution levels rise, and authorities want to control harmful emissions from two-wheelers too.

To make things easier for vehicle owners, the government will introduce a digital system. Paper challans will be replaced with online fines. Route permits will be available with just one click, reducing delays and bribery. These digital reforms aim to make the transport system more transparent and user-friendly.

Hassan also mentioned that vehicle overloading remains a major concern. Overloaded vehicles cause accidents and increase pollution. Authorities have mapped all districts to monitor overloading strictly. This data will help enforce rules better across Punjab.

Officials believe these steps will improve air quality and road safety. Motorists must get their motorcycles tested and certified soon. The government will start inspections and enforce penalties for violations.
