German police shot and killed a 27-year-old Afghan man after he attacked officers with a knife during an attempted arrest in the southern city of Wangen. One police officer was seriously injured in the attack but is now in stable condition, according to authorities.
The incident occurred when two officers visited the man’s residence to take him into custody to serve a prison sentence related to a previous assault case. As the officers attempted to carry out the arrest, the man suddenly attacked them with a knife, prompting them to open fire in self-defense.
Despite emergency efforts to save the attacker’s life, he succumbed to his injuries on the spot. Police confirmed that the injured officer suffered multiple stab wounds but received immediate medical attention and is expected to recover.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the use of firearms by police during the incident, as is standard protocol in such cases. Officials emphasized that the attack was sudden and left officers with no choice but to respond with lethal force.
This event adds to a growing list of violent incidents in Germany, some involving migrants. Recent attacks have included knife assaults and vehicle ramming incidents, which have reignited intense political debate around immigration policies.
In response to rising public concern, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has introduced stricter immigration measures. These include turning back undocumented migrants at borders in a bid to tighten control over illegal entries into the country.
