In order to ensure implementation of the province-wide ban on plastic bags, the Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) has intensified enforcement operations across Sindh.
A total of 657 inspections were conducted at various markets, wholesale points, and shopping malls in different divisions of the province. These include 219 inspections in Karachi, 165 in Hyderabad, 96 in Sukkur, 93 in Shaheed Benazirabad, 63 in Mirpurkhas, and 21 in Larkana.
Spokesperson for the Environment Department stated that during these visits, wherever violations were observed, immediate notices and warning letters were issued. However, a large majority of the markets were found in compliance with the law, which he described as a welcome development. He added that major shopping malls, retail chains, and store owners have rapidly adopted the use of cloth and reusable bags, which reflects growing civic awareness and a positive shift in behaviour.
Secretary Environment, Climate Change, and Coastal Development, Agha Shahnawaz Khan said that environmental protection remains a top priority for the Sindh Government, and the province-wide campaign against plastic pollution has received commendable cooperation from the public, traders, wholesalers and market operators. He emphasized that this legislation is not merely a restriction but an essential step toward securing a cleaner and healthier environment for future generations.
Agha Shahnawaz Khan warned that violations of the plastic bag ban would not be tolerated. “Penalties will not be limited to fines-arrests may also be made in cases of non-compliance,” he added. He further added that the Environment Department is in continuous coordination with local governments, municipal corporations, mayors, district administrations, and law enforcement agencies to ensure strict and sustainable implementation of the law.
The Secretary also appealed to citizens to adopt an environmentally responsible attitude by avoiding plastic bags and opting for reusable alternatives. “This shift is not temporary-it is a permanent change that will be supported through ongoing awareness campaigns and close monitoring of compliance,” he added.
