LAHORE – The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has announced the arrival of the first spell of monsoon rains, which will continue until July 1. Heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds are expected in most districts, raising concerns about flooding and landslides.
Early morning downpours hit Islamabad and nearby Rawalpindi, causing water to accumulate on roads and in low-lying areas. The rain continues intermittently, disrupting traffic and increasing the risk of urban flooding. Authorities are closely monitoring the rising water level in Nullah Lai in Rawalpindi.
PDMA has forecast widespread rainfall in several areas including Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiyat, Attock, Chakwal, Mandi Bahauddin, Hafizabad, Gujrat, Jhelum, and Gujranwala. Other cities like Lahore, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Narowal, Toba Tek Singh, Jhang, Sargodha, and Mianwali are also expected to receive rain.
From June 26 to June 28, southern Punjab regions such as Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Bahawalpur, and Bahawalnagar are likely to experience monsoon activity. Punjab Relief Commissioner Nabeel Javed has directed all commissioners and deputy commissioners to stay alert and keep rescue teams ready.
Additionally, PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia warned about the increased risk of landslides in hilly areas like Murree and Galiyat. A circular has been issued to health, irrigation, communication, local government, and livestock departments to remain vigilant and prepared.
This year, PDMA forecasts rainfall to be 25 percent above the average during the monsoon season, urging everyone to take precautions and stay safe as heavy rains continue.
