Russian attacks kill five in Kyiv, cause fires and damage to metro shelter

KYIV – Overnight Russian drone and missile strikes in Kyiv and its surrounding areas killed five people and injured many others, Ukrainian officials reported on Monday. The attacks also sparked fires in residential neighborhoods and damaged an entrance to a metro station used as a bomb shelter.

Timur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military administration, condemned the strikes, saying they targeted places where civilians gather. “Residential buildings and shelter exits were hit — this is the Russian style,” he said on Telegram. Russia has not responded to these latest attacks.

At least four people died in Kyiv’s busy Shevchenkivskyi district, where a residential high-rise’s entrance was completely destroyed. Ukraine’s Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said rescue efforts are ongoing, with people still trapped under the rubble.

The strikes damaged six of Kyiv’s ten districts, including several apartment buildings, and injured at least ten people. Nearby, a 68-year-old woman was killed in the greater Kyiv region, with eight others wounded, according to the region’s governor Mykola Kalashnik.

Photos from Ukraine’s State Emergency Service showed rescuers evacuating residents from burning buildings. Among those saved was a pregnant woman. The attacks also damaged a metro station exit in the Sviatoshynskyi district and an adjacent bus stop, important for civilian protection during bombings.

Last week’s deadliest attack on Kyiv involved hundreds of drones and left 28 people dead with over 150 injured. Ukrainian officials said nearly 30 locations were hit during that multi-wave assault, signaling continued heavy fighting despite ongoing peace efforts.
