Bangladesh received a major boost ahead of the second Test against Sri Lanka, as star all-rounder and vice-captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz has returned to training after recovering from a fever. His recovery has raised hopes of his inclusion in the playing XI for the crucial Colombo Test starting June 25.
Mehidy had missed the training camp before the series opener in Galle and was ruled out of the first Test due to illness. His absence raised concerns, especially as the team struggled without a frontline spinner on a turning track. However, on June 19, Mehidy rejoined the squad in Colombo, signaling his likely return to action.
“He (Mehidy) is much better and came to the ground today,” said team manager Nafees Iqbal. According to team sources, the all-rounder is recovering well and is expected to be fully fit in time for the second Test.
His return is particularly important for Bangladesh, as the Colombo pitch is expected to assist spinners. In the first Test, Anamul Haque Bijoy was brought in as a replacement but failed to impress, scoring a duck in the first innings.
Meanwhile, spin bowling consultant Mushtaq Ahmed has temporarily left the squad after completing his scheduled duties during the preparation phase. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) confirmed that Mushtaq will return for the ODI series, which begins in early July.
Mehidy’s availability will be crucial as Bangladesh aims to level the two-match Test series. His all-round skills and experience could provide the edge the team needs on a spin-friendly surface in Colombo.
