Pre-monsoon rains to hit Pakistan from june 20–23, heatwave likely to subside

ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted a spell of pre-monsoon rains across the country from June 20 to 23, bringing much-needed relief from the ongoing heatwave. Moist winds from the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea are entering upper and central regions of Pakistan. These, combined with a westerly wave approaching by June 20, are expected to create unstable weather conditions, including thunderstorms and scattered downpours.

From June 20 to 23, parts of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa—including cities like Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Faisalabad, Peshawar, and Swat—can expect dust storms, wind, and thundershowers. Some areas may also experience heavy rainfall and hailstorms.

Meanwhile, from June 21 to 23, parts of southern Punjab and northeastern Balochistan—such as Multan, Bahawalpur, Sahiwal, Zhob, and Barkhan—are also likely to receive showers. Upper Sindh areas, including Sukkur, Larkana, and Jacobabad, may see similar weather between June 22 and 24.

The Met Office warned that strong winds and lightning could damage weak structures like trees, electric poles, and solar panels. Urban flooding is also possible in low-lying parts of Lahore, Islamabad, and Gujranwala during heavy rain.

Authorities have been urged to stay alert and prepare for any emergencies. The public is advised to avoid travel in flood-prone areas and farmers should adjust crop plans according to the forecast.
