LAHORE – Today marks the fifth death anniversary of Tariq Aziz, the legendary voice behind Pakistan Television’s golden era. Known for his famous greeting, “Dekhti aankhon, sun’te kaanon ko Tariq Aziz ka salaam,” he left behind a legacy that still echoes in the hearts of millions.
Tariq Aziz was born on April 28, 1936, in Jalandhar. He began his broadcasting journey with Radio Pakistan Lahore before becoming the first male announcer on PTV when it launched in 1964. From that day forward, his deep, commanding voice became a staple on national television.
He became a household name through the long-running quiz show Neelam Ghar, which he hosted for over four decades. The show not only entertained generations but also played a key role in promoting knowledge and culture across Pakistan.
Apart from television, Tariq Aziz also made his mark in Pakistani cinema. His debut film Insaniyat hit screens in 1967, followed by notable performances in movies like Salgirah, Qasam Us Waqt Ki, and Charagh Kahan Roshni Kahan.
A true man of many talents, Aziz wrote poetry in both Urdu and Punjabi and received the prestigious Pride of Performance Award in 1992. He later served as a Member of the National Assembly from 1997 to 1999, further contributing to public life.
Tariq Aziz passed away on June 17, 2020, but his voice and legacy remain unforgettable. Today, fans and admirers across the country remember the man who gave a face and voice to PTV’s golden days.
