Ali Zafar slams budget 2025, warns it could paralyze Pakistan’s industry

ISLAMABAD – PTI Senator Ali Zafar has sharply criticized the federal government’s proposed budget, warning that it could seriously damage Pakistan’s already struggling industrial sector. He accused the authorities of burdening the economy with excessive taxes and flawed fiscal policies.

Speaking during a Senate session on Monday, Zafar questioned the government’s claim that new taxes would promote economic growth. “They are trying to grow the economy by squeezing it tighter. That’s not how growth works,” he remarked.

He strongly opposed the newly introduced carbon tax, saying it was unnecessary when international climate funds are already available. “Why punish industries when climate funds exist? This carbon tax is just another blow to businesses,” he added.

Zafar also voiced serious concerns about the expanded powers given to the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), claiming it had been turned into a “police force.” He criticized the now-withdrawn clause that allowed FBR officials to arrest individuals without a warrant, calling it a fear tactic against taxpayers.

Although the Minister for Law clarified that the arrest provision had been removed, Zafar insisted the government’s intent was clear. “They tried to push it through—only public pressure forced them to backtrack,” he noted.

Additionally, Zafar accused the government of hypocrisy over its environmental policies. “They preach going green but slap an 18% tax on solar panels,” he said. He concluded by suggesting that the government was more focused on targeting PTI leadership than solving economic issues.
