Tragedy strikes in Gilgit: groom among six killed as vehicle falls into river

GILGIT – A wedding celebration turned into a heartbreaking tragedy on Sunday when a vehicle carrying the groom and his family plunged into a river in Gilgit’s Chalt Nagar area, killing all six passengers. The victims were all members of the same family.

According to rescue officials, the accident occurred while the family was on their way to bring the bride home. The vehicle reportedly lost control while taking a sharp turn and veered off the road, falling into the fast-flowing river below.

Rescue teams rushed to the scene and began a recovery operation immediately. So far, three bodies have been retrieved from the river, while efforts continue to locate and recover the remaining victims. The challenging terrain and strong currents are making the operation difficult.

Eyewitnesses say the road where the accident took place is known for being narrow and dangerous, especially around sharp bends. Locals have long demanded safety barriers and road improvements in the area to prevent such tragedies.

This devastating incident has left the entire community in mourning, with many expressing grief and shock over the sudden loss of lives during what was supposed to be a joyful occasion. Authorities are now investigating the cause of the crash and reviewing safety measures on the route.

As the search continues, rescue officials have urged travelers to exercise extreme caution on mountainous roads, especially during celebrations when large groups often travel together.
