ISLAMABAD – The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has extended the deadline for filing Sales Tax and Federal Excise Returns for the tax period of April 2025 until June 5. This extension aims to provide additional time for businesses facing delays in finalizing paperwork.
However, the FBR clarified that the extension is only available to taxpayers who deposited their due tax amounts by the original deadline of May 18. The condition ensures that the government’s revenue stream remains uninterrupted despite the grace period for filing returns.
The FBR issued the directive under Section 74 of the Sales Tax Act, 1990, and Section 43 of the Federal Excise Act, 2005. The notification was shared with tax offices across the country, including the Large Taxpayers Offices (LTOs), Medium Taxpayers Office (MTO), Corporate Tax Offices (CTOs), and Regional Tax Offices (RTOs).
Officials explained that the decision was made to accommodate tax professionals and companies who may have struggled with document preparation. This measure follows the FBR’s usual practice of providing limited relief based on business community feedback.
Moreover, the extension highlights the FBR’s attempt to balance taxpayer convenience with revenue collection goals. The board urged tax offices to ensure taxpayers are well-informed and that the extended deadline is strictly followed.
The move has been welcomed by many businesses as a helpful step during a busy financial period. However, tax professionals have been advised not to delay return filings unnecessarily to avoid future penalties.
