KARACHI: Karachi Mayor Waseem Akhtar has assured the United Nations and other international organisations of support to cope with air pollution in the city. During a meeting with a delegation of United Nations Association of Pakistan (UNAP) at the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC)’s Office on Monday, the mayor said that the KMC would ensure all-out cooperation with UNAP’s efforts to achieve the United Nation’s sustainable development goals set for 2030 regarding health, education, gender equality and environment. The delegation was led by UNAP President Mohi. Other members were General Secretary Ghazala Humayon, and Rafi Aziz Sahikh. The delegation informed the mayor that in a recent research of the UN on air pollution, climate and environment had provided sufficient evidence that Karachi was one of the severely affected cities of the world by the climate change whereas the air pollution tempo had been found alarmingly dangerous in different parts of the city. “The UNAP is deeply concerned at the current situation of environment and wishes to help improve the city’s environment together with the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation. In this regard the UNAP was considering to planting 5,000 trees in Karachi,” the delegation said. Waseem said that the KMC was taking valuable steps and efforts to improve the situation. He also said metropolitans institutions were working with fewer resources but the conditions would become better after working with the UN. “We are fully trying to resolve all problems of city as soon as possible.” Published in Daily Times, October 24th 2017.
