Lauren Graham reveals where Lorelai and Luke currently stand

Coffee, please, but this time hold the shot of cynicism. While it took several years and a gallons of coffee for Lorelai Gilmore and Luke Danes to find their way together on Gilmore Girls, by the time viewers caught up with them in the 2016 four-part follow-up A Year in the Life, Stars Hollow’s most beloved couple was finally ready to tie the knot.

So, where does that leave them eight years later? Lauren Graham has some thoughts.

“They’re definitely still together,” the actress told E! News in an exclusive joint interview with onscreen husband Scott Patterson. “I don’t know what sort of grandchildren situation there might be, but I think we’re living happily in town.”

The grandchildren situation, of course, being the bombshell pregnancy news Rory dropped on her newlywed mom as the limited series came to a close. But despite knowing exactly how Luke and Lorelai are doing these days, Lauren and Scott are reticent to give too much thought imagining their characters’ lives today.

And there are two reasons for that.

“It’s not up to us,” Lauren, 57, explained, noting their future is in the hands of creator Amy Sherman-Palladino. “And also, because whatever fans think has happened, I don’t want to disavow them of that.”

Still, they know it’s a hot topic. “This gets us in trouble,” she said, to which Scott added, “Anything you say is going to go viral.”

While fans can breathe a sigh of relief knowing Luke and Lorelai are still living their happily ever after they’ll also be able to see the duo showcase their affection in a new Walmart ad, during which the Luke’s Diner owner proves he still knows the way to Lorelai’s heart.

And not only did their collaboration with Walmart see Lauren and Scott reunite-with one another and their beloved characters-it also brought them back to the Stars Hollow lot they filmed Gilmore Girls on from 2000 to 2007 and then again for Netflix’s A Year in the Life.

“When I passed our old parking spaces and where the trailers used to be, it was really, really emotional,” Scott, 66, admitted, “I’ve always said it’s great having a steady job, but it was the place where all of my dreams came true.”

For Lauren, the briefest glimpse into Luke and Lorelei’s life-not to mention an even smaller glimpse into what Kirk is up to-was a beautiful tribute to their show.

“One of the fun parts of getting to do this, was just how familiar it all was,” she gushed. “Somebody said, ‘Oh, wouldn’t you be surprised that Sean Gunn is the delivery man?’ And I was like, ‘No, you would not be surprised, because Kirk has every job in town.’ It was just fun to be back in the imaginative space.”

But while fans still dream about yet another Gilmore Girls revival, Lauren stressed that any reunion would have to serve the story.

“At this point it’s the same what it would take that got us back together last time,” the Parenthood alum explained, “which that it is a creative step forward and that it would be giving fans what they want while honoring what we did already. And those are really hard things. Those are sort of esoteric concepts to pin down.”

Still, while an official next installment in the Gilmore Girls canon may not be imminent, both Lauren and Scott are thrilled by the prospects of revisiting Stars Hollow when the right time calls for it. As Lauren put it, “Maybe we’ll just keep doing something and keeping it alive.”
