Pakistan needs to craft customized template for disaster resilience: NDMA chief

Chairman National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik on Friday emphasized the need for a customized template for disaster-impacted sectors, robust anticipatory actions and efficient post-disaster reconstruction using local materials and skills.

The NDMA convened a seminar on Climate and Disaster Risk Financing at the National University of Technology (NUTECH) here that brought together experts, policymakers, and stakeholders from diverse sectors to enhance Pakistan’s disaster resilience.

Inam Haider also highlighted the collation of global best practices to craft Pakistan specific customized templates for all sectors impacted by national disasters to mitigate risks.

The seminar featured in-depth discussions on Pakistan’s Risk Financing profile in the face of climate-induced disasters, poly-disasters, and related emergencies.

The Panel discussion was aimed at Financial Preparedness of Pakistan vis-a-vis Climate and Disaster Risks, that was participated by Chairman NDMA, Lieutenant General, Imam Haider Malik, PM Coordinator on Climate Change, Romina Khurshid Alam, Resident Representative, UNDP, Samuel Rizk, Executive Director, SDPI, Abid Qaiyum Suleri, Member DRR, NDMA, Idrees Mahsud and Arup Chatterjee from ADB.

The seminar aimed to emphasize the significance of global stock takes which are required to be transformed into executive actions as adopted in previous COP events. The event also highlighted Pakistan’s narrative demonstrating regional leadership during upcoming COP29, in Azerbaijan – Nov 2024.

Secondly, it focused on development of knowledge products for enhancing advocacy on the mainstreaming of climate and disaster risk finance and its integration in national planning and development mechanisms and instruments.

The seminar was attended by key stakeholders, including government officials, Ambassadors, representatives of UN agencies, development partners, humanitarian organizations, academia, disaster response experts, media, tech professionals and youth, all dedicated to investing in disaster risk reduction and resilience building as a key component of sustainable development.
