LAHORE: At least seven people, including three children, lost their lives in rain-related incidents in Punjab on Wednesday.
Rain paralysed civic life in the provincial capital as several roads were inundated. Massive traffic jams and frequent power outages added to the miseries of the people and commuters.
According to details, a mother along with her two children was killed in Chung Sher Shah village when a wall of her house collapsed. Upon being informed, rescuers pulled the children and their mother out of the rubble. The injured were taken to a nearby hospital where doctors pronounced them brought dead. The tragic incident sparked panic among the locals as well as its surrounding areas. Later, police handed over the dead bodies to their family members after completing legal formalities.
In another incident, three people were killed when roof of their house caved in near Raiwind road. The deceased have been identified as Akbar, Aslam and Ijaz.
In yet another incident, a minor girl was electrocuted, while other eight people received burn injuries when a high transmission electricity wire touched the metallic window frame of their house in Dharampura area.
Meanwhile, rain also exposed tall claims of the district administration and other departments concerned as rainwater submerged several low-lying areas in the city.
Although Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) staffers were seen present at several low-lying areas but they could not succeed in draining out rainwater. Power supply was also disrupted in several areas of city, including NA-120 constituency, after the heavy downpour caused several feeders to trip.
According to the Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) spokesperson, around 200 feeders were tripped due to heavy rain. He said that 110 feeders were restored while repairing work on remaining feeders was being done.
Separately, a father of two was gunned down by four people over a monetary dispute in Old Anarkali police limits.
The deceased has been identified as Fakkar Islam of Ichhra. Police have registered a case against accused.
